Our pet picks of the week are Mona and Big Hearted. Mona is a soulful senior German Shepherd. Often mistaken for a puppy because of her sweet face, Mona is actually 11 years old but don’t let her age fool you. She’s still full of a lot of vim and vigor and has a lot of strength at the end of her leash. However, with age comes wisdom and Mona knows and appreciates the benefits of a nice, long nap, too. She does very well with kids, adults and dogs but doesn’t play well with cats. She’s quite the gal. Mona was our ambassador at the Summer Solstice Celebration in Rockland and really enjoyed meeting and greeting the crowd. Mona may have more years behind her than ahead of her but she is deserving of a loving home for her golden years. Come on in to the shelter and meet Mona, take her for a walk and see why she is such an awesome dog.

Our feline pick of the week is Big Hearted and he is aptly named. He is such a sweet boy. At just about a year old, Big Hearted has essentially grown up at the shelter as he was a youngster who came in right before our quarantine period earlier in the year. Now he joins the dozens of other cats who are vying for a chance to go home each time someone comes to the shelter. He can be a tad bashful in the shelter setting but is a very loving boy. He gets along well with other cats too. If you have a big heart and a place in your home you could be a matched set.

We have great news to share. Ice, a recent feline featured as pet pick of the week was adopted. Although all adoptions are worthy of celebration, Ice’s adoption was extra special. He was the 400th shelter cat to be adopted from the satellite adoption center at The Animal House in Damariscotta. To mark this amazing milestone, adoptive family Max and Sarah were greeted by store owner Aubrey Martin with balloons and a celebratory cake and the news that they had won a years’ worth of food from Nature’s Variety. Executive Director Tracy Sala was on hand to congratulate the lucky pair and to receive word that an amazing 400 pounds of Nature’s Variety food will also be generously donated to the shelter to help the cats still awaiting homes of their own. Thank you to the Animal House for helping us create families for our great shelter animals and for facilitating this wonderful gift. We’ll be at the Animal House on Saturday, June 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for kittenpalooza. We’ll have oodles of kittens available for adoption. The cute meter will be off the charts. Join us and help the Animal House adopt out numbers 401, 402…410 and so on. We currently have more than 50 kittens in foster care so we are sure to have the one (or two) you’ve been looking for. Give the shelter a call and we’ll help you make a perfect match.

Thank you to Steve and Keith of 3 Dogs Café in Rockport for hosting a BBQ for Man and his Beasts on June 18 with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the shelter. It was a great day, with wonderful food and company both humane and canine. The dogs seemed to enjoy themselves the most at this ultimate canine play date. Thank you to 3 Dogs Café for their support and generosity.
