The St. Luke Lutheran Church Concert Handbell Choir from Gales Ferry, Conn., will perform a free concert Saturday, July 2 at 1 p.m. in the Camden Amphitheatre, Atlantic Avenue as part of the Midcoast’s Festival of Independence weekend.

The Concert Handbell Choir is one of six handbell choirs from St. Luke Lutheran Church and is comprised of all high school students. Their repertoire includes a wide variety of sacred, classical and popular music. They play five octaves of handbells and five octaves of Melody Chimes. The handbell program at St. Luke begins in the third and fourth grades, so all the Concert Handbell Choir ringers have been ringing for more than five years.

The choir has a rich performance history; 10 years ago, it performed the opening concert for a handbell festival in front of an audience of more than 800 ringers. They have toured England twice, played in the United States Coast Guard Band’s Christmas program, as well as numerous other festivals. This summer they are touring in Maine.

Previous summer tours took them to the Midwest (2005) to Washington D.C., including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2006); to Northern New England (2007); and to southern Florida including a performance at EPCOT (2008) and down the East Coast to South Carolina (2010). In 2009, the choir recorded a CD of Christmas music, “Ring in the Season.”
