The Jackson Memorial Library of Tenants Harbor will open its fourth annual St. George Literary Series with Steve Thomas speaking and reading from his book, “The Last Navigator.” The free event will take place Thursday, June 30 at 6 p.m. at the Ocean View Grange, Route 131, preceded by a 5:30 p.m. reception.

Thomas is the Emmy Award-winning host of public television’s “This Old House” series; he also has produced and directed series for The History Channel and PBS. Thomas works with Planet Green as a green building and renovation expert.

Thomas also is a master yachtsman. When he was 13, he crewed a yacht racing to Hawaii and back to Seattle and, as he has said, “I was hooked.” In the early 1980s, he journeyed to the remote Micronesian island of Satawal to learn the ancient technique of star path navigation under the master navigator Mau Piailug. This “great and romantic dream” came at a time when the wise elders of the islands were anxious to pass on their knowledge. Since Micronesia has an oral tradition they were concerned that The Talk of the Sea and the highly secret Talk of Light would disappear with their deaths.

The evening promises to be entertaining as well as informative. Thomas is a dynamic speaker, much in demand around the country. For more information on this or future programs, contact Yvonne Gloede at Jackson Memorial Library, 372-8961 or visit JacksonMemorialLibrary.org.
