State police said speed is the likely cause of a single-car fatal crash in South Thomaston late Monday night, June 20 that killed a teenage girl.

Killed in the crash was 17-year-old Aleisha Sonksen of Owls Head, according to a news release from the Department of Public Safety.

Sonksen just completed her junior year at Camden Hills Regional High School. Her parents are Marlowe Sonksen of Camden and Joyce Burnham of Owls Head.

Sonksen was a passenger in a 1998 BMW Z3, a small two-seat sports car, that went out of control on Route 73 and overturned several times.

The 17-year-old male driver, also from Owls Head, had minor injuries and was treated at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport. His name is being withheld because of his age. A team of troopers and deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crash, which was reported just before midnight.

Once the crash report is completed, it will be reviewed by the district attorney’s office.
