Heartwood Regional Theater Company will present Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Sunday in the Park with George” beginning Friday, July 1 in the Parker B. Poe Theater of Lincoln Academy, Academy Hill Road.

“Sunday in the Park with George,” with lyrics and music by Sondheim and book by James Lapine, is a multi-award winning musical inspired by the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by the French Post-Impressionist painter Georges Seurat. The musical is known for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of art and those who live it.

The cast, auditioned and selected by production coordinator John Adams and artistic director Griff Braley, has been hard at work for month on the immensely challenging music.  Led by music director Sean Fleming and vocal coach Beth Preston, the group includes actors new to Heartwood, along with several returning voices. Equity Actor Dennis St. Pierre and Alexandra Desauliers, a 2011 graduate of Colby College, lead a talented cast that includes John Adams, Nina Tilander, Ellen Whalley, Joe McGrann, Millie Santiago, John Strong, Mary Boothby, Caleb Lacey, Dan True, Tim Badgley, Nancy Grace Thurston, Sarah Winglass and Mena Han-Lalime.

Settings are completely computer generated, using still images, animations, moving lights and video. Five LCD projectors integrate with lights and moving set pieces to create an artistic universe incorporating multimedia options, usually only seen in larger stage professional projects. Artistic team Erica Qualey, Susan Bickford, Mary Boothby and Chris Martin worked with Braley to design a very intimate setting requiring delicate, precise planning and design.

Matching 19th-century French costume color and texture to Seurat’s painting is in the capable hands of Sue Ghoreyeb, assisted by Robin Bixby and Daryl Hahn. Tech director Letitia Munson will ensure smooth integration of all technical elements during the production. Assisting with lighting are LA student technicians Jim Lydon and John Braley.

Performances will be Fridays and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. through July 16 plus 3 p.m. Sunday, July 17. Tickets are $20 reserved and $22 at door; $12 for students and may be reserved by calling 563-1373 or sending email to boxoffice@heartwoodtheater.org.
