Beatrice E. Ames, 85, died June 17, 2011, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center from congestive heart failure.

Beatrice was born on Vinalhaven on May 15, 1926. She was the daughter of Harvard and Nina (Loud) Burgess. She was educated at the Vinalhaven school, where she graduated June 8, 1944. She married Lavon S. Ames Jr. on Sept. 28, 1945. They lived on Matinicus Island and Vinalhaven Island, and in St. George. Together they had three children, Rosemary Jane, Maxwell Harold and Catherine Yvonne. She belonged to the Rebeccas of St. George, and she was the head matron.

Beatrice was employed for many years at Halls Market in Tenants Harbor, where she enjoyed talking to and meeting new people. She also enjoyed the regulars who would stop in just to say hello and to share a story or funny joke with her.

Beatrice was predeceased by her daughter, Rosemary Jane; her son, Maxwell Harold; granddaughter, Marina Dawn; brother, Eugene Burgess and sister-in-law Lucille Burgess; sister, Alice Hanley and brother-in-law James Hanley; and the father of her children, Lavon S. Ames Jr.

She is survived by her daughter Catherine Oakes and husband, Robert Oakes Sr., of Vinalhaven; stepchildren, Carolyn Ames and Lavon “Biscuit” Ames of Vinalhaven and Jackie Ames of Freeport; grandchildren, Robert Oakes Jr. and wife, Shelby, of Rockland, Hollie Arey and husband, John Arey Jr. of Vinalhaven, Colby Oakes and wife, Wanda, of Vinalhaven and Marshel Ames and wife, Tracy, of North Haven. She also had the pleasure of enjoying her 13 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Carvers Cemetery in Vinalhaven July 2 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Island Community Ambulance Service of Vinalhaven in her memory.
