Our pet picks of the week are Kai and Bella. Kai is a 2-year-old Chinese Shar pei /black lab mix but acts more like an oversized pug. He’s just a big goofball. Kai has a distinctive blue tongue and curly tail, trademarks of the Shar pei breed. He gets along with other dogs and cats too. An ideal day for Kai is to take a car ride to the beach to play a game of fetch then back home to hang with the family. Kai will make a devoted and loyal family dog. He’s a great “guard” dog, sounding the alarm when strangers come to the door and then becomes welcoming with an introduction. If you like the big headed, big hearted dogs then come meet Kai. He may be just the dog for you. Bella is 2-year-old hound /Springer mix. She came in as a stray from Warren. There are signs that Bella recently had a litter of pups but as she was picked up as a stray in Warren, we have no idea if she was lost or abandoned in the woods. Her pups were not with her. Despite her recent past, Bella is a real sweetheart and a very loving gal. She’s smart and already knows many of the basic commands. She also gets along with most dogs and cats too. Bella is a great family dog in search of a great family. We also have oodles of kittens in foster care that are ready for adoption as well as plenty of adult felines at the shelter waiting for a home.

Thank you to everyone who went out to Eat for Pete’s Sake. All reports from both diners and restaurants have been amazing. So many scrumptious meals were enjoyed for a good cause. We are delighted that the community has enthusiastically embraced this fundraiser. Thank you to the 24 restaurants that participated and made this event possible. We hope that you will continue to support these restaurants that support the shelter by dining at them all year round.

Looking for something to do this weekend? Join us this Saturday, June 18 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the annual downtown Rockland Summer Solstice Celebration. We’ll have a booth in front of Sea Street on Main where we will be offering personally engraved, double-sided I.D. tags for your pets to help them home should they become lost. You can also tag your luggage, your keys or make an engraved necklace for your BFF. All tags are just $7 and are engraved in a matter of minutes. You can buy an HSKC T-shirt, a cat nip bag for your favorite feline or get a tasty bag of popcorn. Or just stop by and say hi and meet some of our wonderful dogs available for adoption. Hope to see you there.

Then you can join us on Sunday, June 19 at 3 Dogs Café in Rockport for their BBQ for Man and His Beast event from 1 to 4 p.m. in the fenced yard adjacent to the restaurant. What a great way to spend some quality time with man’s best friend. Share a delicious meal with your dog while enjoying the company of other dog lovers and their dogs. Well behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. There will be food for humans and a special menu for Fido too. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Humane Society of Knox County.

Thank you to the good folks at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust in Rockland who designated HSKC to be the beneficiaries of its employee charitable fund. Executive Director Tracy Sala gladly accepted a check for $386 from the bank tellers. We appreciate the support of businesses in the community like Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and it means a great deal that the employees at the bank chose the shelter to be the recipient of their generosity.

Our wish list this week: Large black garbage bags, paper towels, canned cat and dog food, wood pellets, KMR (kitten milk replacement), postage stamps, laundry detergent, and gift certificate to Staples and Walmart.
