Travel writers network explores Midcoast

ROCKLAND — More than 30 members of the New England Travel Writers Network enjoyed a two day introduction to Rockland’s many attractions, inns and historic schooners on June 5-6. Activities included tours and culinary highlights from Primo Restaurant, Fiore Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars, Breakwater Vineyards and Café Miranda; tours of the Farnsworth Museum and Wyeth Art Center, Maine Lighthouse Museum and Owls Head Transportation Museum; receptions and dinners at the Historic Inns of Rockland and on historic schooners – all members of the Maine Windjammer’s Association.

The New England Travel Writers Network meeting was hosted by the Maine Windjammer Association and Historic Inns of Rockland with contributions from Breakwater Vineyards, Café Miranda, Fiore Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars, Ship to Shore Lobsters and Shag Rock Brewery.

Richard Higgins Architects partners with Merriam

ROCKLAND — On Jan. 1 Richard Higgins of Richard Higgins Architects, Inc. announced the reorganization of his architectural firm, after 20 years, to include a partnership with architect, Jason Merriam. Merriam, vice president, and partner with Richard Higgins, has worked with Higgins for the past seven years. The new firm name is Higgins + Merriam Architects and is still located on the third floor of 423 Main St. in Rockland, just above Lily Bistro.

Merriam is a Maine native having grown up in Bucksport. He graduated from Norwich University and completed internship training in Maine and Connecticut. Upon returning to Maine, he became a licensed Maine architect while working for Higgins. His wife, Dr. Amy Campbell is a dentist at Glen Cove Dental Associates. They currently live in Rockland with their son Elliot.


PBMC Cancer Care Program approved by American College of Surgeons

ROCKPORT – The American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer has granted three-year approval with commendation to the Cancer Care program at Pen Bay Medical Center.

“This is a significant recognition of the quality of care offered by our doctors, nurses and staff at the Cancer Care Center,” said Dr. Dana Goldsmith, vice president for medical affairs at Pen Bay, in a news release. “It also emphasizes the value of state-of-the-art cancer care close to home for the people of Midcoast Maine.”


Pen Bay Healthcare is sponsoring two upcoming events supporting the cancer care program. Pen Bay’s Midsummer Masquerade Gala – an evening of dinner, dancing and disguise – will be held on July 23 at the Samoset Resort in Rockport from 5 to 10 p.m. Funds raised will support mammograms for uninsured women, clinical trials and enhanced patient navigation services. The Midcoast Breast Cancer Classic golf tournament will be a four-player scramble, open to both men and women. Free children, young adult clinic opens at Downeast School of Massage

WALDOBORO — The Downeast School of Massage in Waldoboro will host its annual Free Student Children’s and Young Adult Massage Clinic on June 25. The clinic is an opportunity for children and their parents to become familiar with massage in a secure, supervised setting while students practice their skills with this special population.

Appointments for the Children’s Massage Clinic are available on June 25, in the morning at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Parents must accompany children to sign release forms and help complete medical history forms. All ages 6 months to 18 are welcome to participate. Hartstone Inn & Hideaway offers Young Chefs Opportunity to Learn

CAMDEN — The Hartstone Inn & Hideaway, a hideaway in the heart of Camden village offer young chefs the opportunity to fine tune their skills, be part of a team, gain experience in a professional kitchen, and be mentored by Chef Michael Salmon.

On June 7, Mark Hsiong En Quiang, a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa Culinary Arts Institute, and Immy Lou B. Tan, a graduate of the International Culinary Arts Academy Cebu, arrived in Camden. Alice Limoges, a Camden Hills Regional High School student has already been training weekends on breakfast and dinner.

Dinner guests of The Hartstone may see some of Mark’s butter, fruit, vegetable, and chocolate carvings and can ask him about the time he supervised the Royal Canadian Mounted Police cook their own dinner in a team building event. Immy will share stories about life in the Philippines. Alice can give a first hand account of what it is like to make Potato Gnocchi with Lobster and Asparagus after participating in one of Chef Michael’s pasta cooking classes.

Mark and Immy will be helping the Hartstone team led by Chef Michael Salmon to prepare dishes including Mosaic of Maine Seafood (lobster, crabmeat, sea scallops and house-smoked salmon), grilled beef tenderloin medallions with a shiitake mushroom and maytag blue cheese crust, and souffle du jour with flavored crème anglaise.

Computer Solutions expands customer service center

ROCKLAND — Computer Solutions has expanded its customer service area at 279 Main St. in Rockland. Owner, Todd Gustafson, wanted to “focus on the customer experience, making the new space inviting, spacious, and convenient,” he said in a news release.  Located between Bay Chiropractic and Frank’s Family Hair Care, the new center will give the business street frontage and a better experience for the customer. Service hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Ennamorati joins Lash Realty

WALDOBORO — Lash Realty Group of Waldoboro announces the newest member of its sales team, Mike Ennamorati.  He is a 2006 graduate of Medomak Valley High School, and a 2010 graduate of the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire, where he earned a degree in financial and managerial economics.

Ennamorati was trained by the Arthur Gary School of Real Estate and said in a news release he is excited to be back in the Midcoast area, where he grew up, to serve clients looking to buy, sell, or invest in property. While in New Hampshire, he gained sales experience as a financial representative serving Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. In his spare time, Ennamorati enjoys tutoring students from the local school district and landscaping for friends and neighbors.
