Phyllis M. Smith, 78, passed away June 12, 2011, at Country Manor Nursing Home in Coopers Mills, following a long illness.

Born in Ayer, Mass., on July 10, 1932, she was the daughter of Frank R. and Marion McGregor Springer. She attended Rockland schools and was a 1951 graduate of Rockland High School. While in high school she worked at Bob’s Lunch Counter in Rockland. While working at that lunch counter, she met her future husband, Lloyd H. Smith, who was a regular customer. The couple married Oct. 22, 1953, at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church in Rockland.

Following graduation, she worked at F. W. Woolworth’s where she particularly enjoyed window dressings and arranging the mannequins for the store’s displays. She also worked for many years at the lunch counter at J. J. Newsbury’s. She later worked for W. T. Grant’s and at Holmes Packing Company.

In her younger years, Phyllis loved roller-skating, ballet dancing and had a great passion for tap dancing. More recently, she became an ardent knitter, creating a large variety of items. She also enjoyed doing puzzles and loved cats, keeping many as pets over the years.

Predeceased by her husband, Lloyd H. Smith, on Aug. 27, 1985, Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Glenn M. Smith and his wife, Heidi, of Thomaston; two daughters, Cheryl L. Verge and her husband, Timothy, of Portland and Dawn M. Smith and her companion Michael Merrifield of Warren; brother-in-law, Clyde Smith and his wife, Barbara, of Owls Head; three grandchildren, Benjamin M. Smith, Noah M. Smith and Madison P. Merrifield; and several nieces and nephews including Joan Sanborn and her husband, David, of Thomaston, Brenda Fishkin and her husband, Barry, of Florida, Franklin Smith Jr. and his wife, Brudy, of Jefferson, and John Smith of Thomaston, all who shared the neighborhood while growing up with her children on Erin Street.

A graveside service will be held Friday, June 24 at 3 p.m. at Village Cemetery, Avenue 8, Erin Street, Thomaston. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer will officiate. A reception will follow at the family home at 52 Erin St. in Thomaston.
