The No. 7 Georges Valley boys tennis team made the 90-mile jaunt to Dixfield June 3 to face No. 2 Dirigo for the right to move on to the Western Class C semifinals.

The Buccaneers, who did not play the Cougars during the regular season, got a sample size of an opponent who lost only one match all season and Georges Valley fell short in its upset bid as the Cougars eliminated the locals from postseason play with a 4-1 quarterfinal victory.

Dirigo (12-2) moved on to host — and lose — to No. 3 Hall-Dale of Farmingdale (11-3) in the next round of the postseason. The Cougars fell to the Bulldogs 3-2. Georges Valley’s season ended at 5-8.

The individual results from the quarterfinal playoff match, with Buc players listed first, were: In singles, Gordon Armstrong lost to Josh Turbide, 2-6, 0-6; Charlie Baker lost to Mason King, 6-4, 4-6, 0-6; and Cy McGeady defeated Joel Cloutier, 7-6, 7-5.

In doubles, Luke Rector and Tyler Gilson lost to Mike Smith and Garrett Carver, 0-6, 2-6; and Wesley Bryant and Sam Crockett lost to Jeremy Briggs and Tom Barnett, 0-6, 4-6.

Georges Valley coach Kathryn Armstrong said her squad performed well, but that Dirigo’s players “had excellent control and placement.” She also praised the work of Baker and McGeady, specifically, with McGeady recording the team’s lone win and Baker battling in a three-set loss.

“Both Baker and McGeady played excellent games,” said Armstrong. “It was Baker’s most aggressive game this season by far. I am very impressed with the team, both in how they fared against Dirigo and their entire improvement throughout the season.”
