“Summer Nights,” a show of recent paintings by Gwen Sylvester of Rockland, will be on view Tuesday, June 7 through July 3 at Badger Café & Pub, on the Common. The public is invited to an opening reception Saturday, June 11 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Sylvester has been engaged in the arts since a young age, showing her work and taking on opportunities in the field of art including commercial art, craft design, arts administration and teaching. She has studied with painters, sculptors and designers renowned in their field, beginning in the 1970s as an art student in the Magnet program. She holds a bachelor’s degree in studio art from University of California at Davis.

Elements of folk humor, fairy tale and a sense of poetry weave their way into her paintings of people, plants, birds and animals.  Sylvester’s abstract sensibility is derived from observations of patterns in nature, as well as stylized design. The paintings on canvas in this show are work done over the last year or two in conjunction with studies in acrylic painting with Susan Toby White, a Belfast painter known for her paintings of dancers.

Sylvester’s work has appeared national and regional shows over the years, where it has received several top awards from museum curators, art critics and art professors. Most recently, her painting “Mussel Eaters” was awarded Best In Show for the Kennebec Valley Art Association’s “Art2011” at the Harlow Gallery juried by two Colby College art professors.
