The second of this season’s Arts in the Barn shows will open an exhibition of oil paintings by Karen Anderson with a public reception Friday, July 10 beginning at 5 p.m. The exhibition will be on view both Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cushing Historical Society’s barn on Hathorne Point Road.

Anderson lives and paints during the winter in Haddonfield, N.J., where she and her husband own an automotive business. They also have a home in Cushing and a daughter living in Thomaston and are looking forward to spending the entire year in Maine in the future.

Although she has been painting for many years and exhibiting her work in at juried shows in New Jersey, Anderson did not begin learning her craft until she was an adult. Her first medium was watercolor. One day, bad weather prevented others in her art class from attending and she was about to leave too when the instructor urged her to stay so that she could start learning to paint in oils. She had no oil paints, but he told her she could use his materials. From that day on, she has been devoted to the medium.
