Members of the Rockland Fire Department were working June 6 to keep a fire in an apartment building on Cottage Street from spreading to surrounding buildings.

The fire was reported around 4 p.m. in a building owned by Colin Wentworth. The fire caused extensive damage to the upper floors of the building.

Multiple fire trucks were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters wearing respirators worked inside the building while water was put on the outside walls to keep the blaze from spreading.

Fire Chief Charles Jordan Jr. said that to the best of his knowledge, everyone was out safe. He said firefighters had completed sweeps of the inside of the upper floors.

The fire started upstairs.

He said it was too early to determine the cause of the blaze, but he expects the State Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate.

“We’ll be here a while,” Jordan said.

The building is assessed at $190,900 in value.

Wentworth said he felt fortunate in a sense because he said this is the first loss he’s had.

Traffic was rerouted around the scene, and a large crowd of neighbors and spectators gathered to watch the fire.

The Rockport Fire Department also responded to assist Rockland, and Thomaston assisted at the scene.
