With the end of the high school baseball season nearing, the start of Midcoast Babe Ruth League baseball play over the weekend assures fans of America’s pastime there will be no down time between seasons on the diamond.

Play for the 10-team league began Sunday, June 5 and will include 13 regular-season games, which will conclude Saturday, July 2. The postseason will be played the following week, with the league championship slated for Saturday, July 9 at Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro.

Participating teams include Georges Valley, Rockport Automotive, Rockland Café, Belfast, Camden-Rockport, Wiscasset Ford, Damariscotta, Waldoboro and Union.

Rockport Automotive 26, Newcastle 2 (5 inns.) … At Newcastle, Rockport Automotive kicked it into overdrive as it cruised past the hosts in a five-inning affair.

Caleb McFarland pitched three innings for the visitors, allowing one hit and two walks, while striking out seven. Sean Pierce and Chandler Crans each threw one inning each of relief, with Pierce allowing one hit and Crans pitching a clean frame.

Leading Rockport Automotive at the plate were Ryan Pierce (single), Nathan Pascal (single), Chandler Crans (double, 2 singles, 6 RBIs), McFarland (single), Pierce (home run, double, 2 singles, 3 RBIs), Calan Schecter (home run, single, 4 RBIs), Sam Gimlewicz (single, RBI), Kyle Crans (2 singles, 3 RBIs), Isaac Filderman (2 singles, 2 RBIs), Brandon Benson (single, RBI) and Daulton Oakes (single, RBI).

McFarland and Pierce belted back-to-back home runs in the second inning, while Crans and Schecter each homered in the fourth.

Damariscotta 15, Georges Valley 7 … At Thomaston, the visitors plated runs in all but one inning and propelled themselves to a convincing win over Georges Valley.

Caleb Jacob rapped an RBI-single for the hosts while Sloane Smith also singled for Georges Valley. Leading Newcastle at the plate were Spencer Alden (triple, single), Matt Tomasillo (2 singles) and Hank Fitzpatrick (3 singles).

Nick Judge pitched 2 1/3 innings for the hosts, allowing nine runs (5 earned) on seven hits and five walks, with three strikeouts. Thomas Curtle tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief, allowing three hits and four walks, while striking out one. Jimmy Strong pitched one inning in relief, allowing two hits and two walks.

Alden allowed one hit and five walks, while striking out three and allowing four runs (2 earned) for Damariscotta, while Tomasillo and A.J. Oliver combined to allow two hits and four walks, while striking out five in three innings of relief.

Georges Valley scored four runs in the second inning after Newcastle pitchers issued three walks, its defense committed two fielding miscues and Jacob came through with an RBI-single. The hosts scored three more in the seventh on a combination of three passed balls, two errors and one wild pitch.

Wiscasset Ford 11, Belfast 10 At Belfast, behind the strength of Chandler Longfellow, Wiscasset did just enough to pull out a one-run victory over the hosts.

Longfellow went 5-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and three singles, while Eddie Stewart (double, single), Nate Howard (double, single) and Darin Wood (3 singles) led the visitors. For Belfast, Damien Benner (triple, 2 singles) and Greg Clark (2 doubles) led the offense.

Stewart worked four innings on the hill to earn the win for Wiscasset, while Wood pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the save.

Rockland Café 19, Union 0 (5 inns.) … At Rockland, the hosts posted an eight-run first inning and scored at least three in each frame, earning a decisive win over the visitors.

For Rockland Café, Cole Chase (2 singles, 2 runs), Nick Mazurek (single, 2 walks, 3 runs), Jordan Carter (double, single, 2 runs), J.T. Tobin (2 singles, 3 runs), Hunter Grindle (3 singles, 3 runs), Zach Peaco (run), Ryan Allender (double, single, run), Zachary Roman (single, 2 runs) Jake Bartlett (walk), Trenton Jarrett (single, run), Mazlin Higbee (hit-by-pitch) Jacob Bracket (walk) and David Gould (single) led the offensive charge.

Ollie Brown had Union’s lone single, while George Field and Nate Mazanec each drew walks in a losing effort.

Carter tossed a complete-game, one-hitter for Rockland Café, walking two batters and striking out nine. Mazanec, Clarence Porter and Devin Field combined to scatter 15 hits and five walks on the day.

Camden-Rockport 19, Waldoboro 9 (6 inns.) … At Rockport, the hosts prevailed over the visitors in a mercy rule-shortened contest.

Leading Camden-Rockport at the plate were Henry Laurita (2 singles), Connor Graffam (2 singles), Sam Berry (2 singles), Teddy Laurita (double), Jake Davee (single), Joe Chamberlain (single), Aubrey Pennington (single) and Ben Rollins (single).

On the hill, Berry walked two and struck out five through four innings of work, while Graffam pitched the final two frames, walking one and fanning two.
