We hope you’ll join us for our grand re-opening this Saturday, June 4 from 11 to 2 p.m. to celebrate the reFURbishments and improvements we have made to the shelter in response to our closure due to a ringworm outbreak earlier in the year. The staff and volunteers have been busy sprucing up the place both inside and out for the big day. We have a lot going on: the unveiling of our new sign, a memorial dedication, tours, face painting and balloon animals for the kids, raffles and a barbecue lunch sponsored by Harbor Road Veterinary Hospital. Be sure to bring a picture of your HSKC alumni for our alumni wall and be entered in a raffle for a great prize. In honor of the event, we will also be running fabulous adoption specials from Saturday, June 4 through Saturday, June 11. For this week only – save $50 off the adoption of an adult dog aged 1 to 7 and for all dogs and cats over the age of 8 the fee is waived. And the adoption fee for adult cats over the age of 1 is just $5.

Also this Saturday is our rescheduled Car Wash and Dog Wash fundraiser at Park Street Car Wash in Rockland. Thanks to our friends at Park Street Car Wash, 100 percent of the proceeds from the day will go to the shelter to help the animals in our care. It starts at 9 a.m. so there will be plenty of time to get your car washed and to stop by the shelter to join in on the festivities.

Our pet picks of the week are Chloe and Betsy. Chloe is a very sweet, 6-year-old spayed female Cocker Spaniel mix. Chloe is a laid back gal. She enjoys taking long walks and then likes nothing better than to curl up next to you on the couch and relax for a stretch. She gets along with everyone: kids, cats and dogs. Chloe is a great family dog who is missing one thing, a family. Are you a family looking for a dog?

Betsy is an adult orange and white tabby cat who has a whole lot of personality. She definitely has her sweet side, but like many cats in the shelter, she gets over stimulated with so many other cats around and her sweet side is overshadowed by her cattitude. Once she is in a home of her own, she will relax and be a much happier, loving kitty. She just needs someone to take a chance on her.

Mark your calendars -Thursday, June 9 is our Fourth Annual Eat for Pete’s Sake fundraising event where you get to eat delicious food for a cause. Dine at one of the following participating restaurants on this special day(either lunch or dinner depending on the restaurant) and the restaurant will donate a percentage of their proceeds to help the shelter animals : Amalfi on the Water, Athen’s Pizzeria, Atlantica, Badger Cafe & Pub, Big Fish, Blue Sky Cantina, Brass Compass, Café Miranda, Come Spring Café, Craignair Inn and Restaurant, Harbor Gawker, Hatchet Mountain Publick House, The Haven, Home Kitchen Café, In Good Company, Offshore Restaurant, Old World Potato, Park Street Grille, Peter Otts, Primo, Prism Restaurant and Gallery, Silver Lane, 3 Dogs Café and the Thomaston Café. Thank you to all who came out to find a treasure or two at our Annual Doggone Yard Sale last weekend. We made more than $3,000 during our two-day event. That’s enough money to spay/neuter more than 40 animals or enough to vaccinate 300 animals against rabies. Thank you for the generosity of the members of the American Legion Hall Post No. 37 for donating their building for our cause. Thank you also to all who donated their great stuff, plants and baked and to the volunteers who helped man the event. We look forward to doing it again next year. We have a real shortage of storage space available, so if anyone has an empty shed or barn we could store things in. Please contact the shelter 594-2200.

Our wish list this week: Rice for our dogs, wood pellets, KMR (kitten milk replacement), cat toys, large black garbage bags, Ziploc bags (quart and gallon size), paper towels, postage stamps, laundry detergent, canned cat and dog food and gift certificates to Staples and Walmart.
