Irene M. Young, 82, died May 29, 2011, at Knox Center in Rockland, after a period of declining health.

Born in Rockland on June 21, 1928, she was the daughter of Elmer C. and Frances Wall Barnes. Irene grew up in Spruce Head Village where she attended the one-room school there.

While in high school, as well as later in life, she babysat for many area families.

On Oct. 2, 1950, she married Grover R. Young in Rockland. She assisted her husband in the operation of their Warren poultry farm. After moving to South Thomaston, she served as bookkeeper for her husband’s carpentry business. She later worked several years as a floor lady with North Lubec Canning Company, Holmes Packing Company and Stinson Packing Company, all in Rockland.

For more than 40 years, Irene assisted her husband in the administration and care of Ocean View Cemetery in South Thomaston.

Irene was predeceased by her beloved husband, Grover, on Sept. 7, 2010; and her brother, Oram Barnes Sr. on April 22, 2011.

She is survived by a cousin whom she considered a sister, Mildred Staples and her husband, Paul, of Owls Head; a niece who has served as caregiver and confidant, Melissa Elwell of Spruce Head; three sisters-in-law, Joanna Yattaw and her husband, Walter, and Ardell Robarts, all of Owls Head, and Joyce Barnes of Pennsylvania; two cousins, Eleanor Carter of St. George and Edelbert Jr. Burton and his wife, Violet; several other nieces; and her brother’s children; her niece, Beth Contreras and her husband, George; and her nephew, Oram Barnes Jr., all of Rockland.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, June 2 at 11 a.m. at Ocean View Cemetery in South Thomaston.
