Wednesday, May 25 was the first warm, sunny day after an extended period of rain and overcast skies, with temperatures reaching 75 degrees Fahrenheit at Knox County Regional Airport.

At nearby Birch Point Beach State Park, people of all ages were enjoying a day at the beach. While children splashed in the icy waves, couples sat on the rocks, enjoying the rare sunshine. The Walauski family of Belfast, part of a home school group that meets at the beach in Owls Head during the summer months, took advantage of the rare sunny day to spend an afternoon running and playing in sea and sand.

Asked what their plans were for the rest of the afternoon, many of those enjoying the warm weather said they were heading to Dorman’s Dairy Dream in Thomaston to top off their day in typical summer fashion.

Opening day for Birch Point Beach State Park is Friday, May 27. During the season, Birch Point Beach State Park is open from 9 a.m. to sunset. Camping is not allowed and dogs must be leashed. Vehicles and open fires are not allowed on the beach, but the park has picnic areas with grills. Visitors are asked to carry out all waste and alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
