The Maine Principals’ Association state singles tennis tournament will begin in the coming days, albeit a few days later than originally planned.

With many schools postponing matches in the past few weeks due to steady rain, the MPA moved the first and second rounds of the tournament, that was to begin Friday, May 27, to Monday, May 30. Two more rounds will follow on Tuesday, May 31, with the semifinals and finals slated for Saturday, June 4.

The event will take place at the Wallach Tennis Compley at Bates College in Lewiston.

Four local student-athletes will participate in the state singles tournament, three from Camden Hills Regional High School and one from Belfast Area High School.

On the boys side, Windjammers Evan Drinkwater and John Vannorsdall will compete, while on the girls side, Windjammer Carissa English and Lion Shashanna Moll will take part in the tourney.

Camden Hills junior Emma Blakeley qualified for the tournament for the third straight year, but was forced to withdraw due to an arm injury, suffered in a recent match, that will sideline her for the remainder of the season.

Seedings and match pairings were released Wednesday, with English receiving the number 11 seed in the girls tournament. All remaining local participants are unseeded.

On the boys side in the first round Monday, Drinkwater will face Oak Hill’s Brian Bradstreet at 9 a.m., while Vannorsdall will face North Yarmouth Academy’s Burke Paxton at 1 p.m.

Should Drinkwater advance, he will face top seed Patrick Ordway of Waynflete at 2:30 p.m., while, if Vannorsdall should advance, he will face the No. 2 seed Bob Tom Flynn of John Bapst at 6:30 p.m.

On the girls side, English was given the No. 11 seed in the tournament, granting her a bye in the first round. English will then face the winner of the match between Scarborough’s Jenna Posey and Fort Kent’s Becca Martin at 5:15 p.m.

Also, Moll will face Catherine McAuley’s Nicole Connolly at 11:45 a.m. Should Moll advance, she will face unseeded Laura Collins of Caribou.
