As a fog bank draped Curtis Island Tuesday afternoon, May 24, schooner crews in Camden Harbor were busy sanding, scraping and painting.

From his perch on the bowsprit of Surprise, Capt. Jack Moore was securing his jib. Moore said May 24 that he would take passengers on his first two-hour trip of the 2011 season on Friday, May 27.

After what he called “a spectacular season” last year, Moore said this one was starting to remind him of the previous summer, when sailors spent many days looking at fog and hoping for a clear day.

Less than a half-hour after Moore said that, the sun was out and gentle breezes were blowing apple blossoms across town.
