Students, teachers and staff members gathered at Coastal Christian School May 14 to break ground on the new Wayne L. Brown Memorial gym and auditorium, according to Acting Principal Dorcelle Brown.

Wayne Brown was one of the founding fathers of the school and Dorcelle was his wife. He died in January 2010.

The school plans to construct a 9,712-square-foot gym and auditorium on its campus on the North Nobleboro Road. The new addition will be attached to the existing building.

The school has raised more than $80,000 for the project, but estimates it may cost as much as $350,000 to complete. She said it may be a steel building.

Asked when the project is expected to be completed, Brown said, “When God finishes the job.”

She said school has benefited from donated time and materials for all of its projects.

The private school opened in 1980 and serves students ranging from kindergarten to grade 12. The Browns were one of six of the school’s original founding couples.
