Winifred V. “Winnie” Burton, 87, died peacefully May 12, 2011, at the Cushing Homestead.

Born in Searsmont on Aug. 13, 1923, she was the daughter of Paul R. and Bernice E. Farrow Thomas. Educated locally she was a 1941 graduate of Camden High School.

Following graduation, Winnie worked for a brief time at Knox Woolen Mill before enlisting in the U.S. Women’s Army Corps in 1943. Winnie completed her basic training in Daytona Beach, Fla., and was then stationed in New Orleans, La., at Camp Plauche. Earning the rank of sergeant she worked as a clerk typist until being promoted to sergeant major administrative non-commissioned officer. As a sergeant major, she supervised enlisted men and woman who worked in the message center, troop processing center and mail center, handling military correspondence and daily rosters. Later Winnie did recruiting in New Orleans and Texas.

Upon her discharge in 1946, Winnie returned to Camden. She was employed with the New England Telephone Company in Rockland, when she met her future husband, Vernon W. Burton. The two were married Nov. 14, 1946. Together they moved to Monhegan where Winnie served as postmaster from December 1963 to 1983. In 1968 the post office was moved to Winnie and Vernon’s home. Winnie enjoyed living on the island year round for 50 years. She took great pride in her home, especially her beautiful flower gardens.

In 1995 Winnie and her husband moved back to the mainland, settling in Camden. After the death of her husband of over 50 years, Winnie continued to live on her own for several years. She was proud to live by herself until March of this year.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1997; a sister, Paula R. Little in 1992; and a sister-in-law, Anita Morris.

Winnie is survived by her nephew, Dana Little and his wife, Loretta, of Rockland; her niece, Rebecca Hartley and her husband, Tom, of Chesapeake, Va.; a great-nephew, Jonathan Little of South Portland; a great-niece, Brittany Hartley of Chesapeake, Va.; a brother-in-law, Robert Burton and his wife, Mari, of Cushing; a sister-in-law, Priscilla O’Hara and her husband, Walter, of Monroe, Conn.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland.
