Geraldine E. Anderson Bergquist, 91, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, May 14, 2011, at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born in New Sweden, Maine, on July 15, 1919, she was the daughter of Henry and Beatrice Dahlberg Anderson. Educated locally, Geraldine attended New Sweden and Caribou schools.

Following high school she married the Rev. Carl A. Bergquist in New Sweden. Mrs. Bergquist spent her time assisting her husband in all church matters. She often served as organist and choir director for the many churches he pastored, including in New Sweden, Waltham, Mass., Bangor, Maine, and Worcester, Mass. Never one to be idle, Mrs. Bergquist also served as the office manager at the Lutheran Home in Worcester, Mass. While living in Bangor, Mrs. Bergquist assisted her husband in the establishment of the mission church the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Mrs. Bergquist’s family remembers her as a woman of great faith.

In recent years Mrs. Bergquist has enjoyed her time as a resident at the Knox Center for Long Term Care. Her daughters said she felt like family there, and will be missed by the staff.

An avid writer, Mrs. Bergquist enjoyed writing plays, pageants and programs for the Swedish Colony in New Sweden. She took great pleasure in painting, especially landscapes, and was also an accomplished pianist and organist. Above all, Mrs. Bergquist will be remembered by her children as a wonderful, loving mother.

Predeceased by her husband in 1995, and a brother, William Anderson, Mrs. Bergquist is survived by her sons, Carl A. Bergquist Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Dunwoody, Ga., Dr. David H. Bergquist and his wife, Laureen, of Hermon and Paul L. Bergquist and his wife, Patricia, of Barre, Mass.; her twin daughters, Judith Pelletier and her husband, Richard, of St. George and Joyann Samson and her husband, Jeff, of Rockport; 12 grandchildren, Kevin Bergquist, Scott Bergquist, Davin Bergquist, Annalisa Cranson, Kristen Pelletier, Kara Pelletier, Kimberly Bassett, Heidi Henderson, Nathaniel Henderson, Amy Bergquist, Elizabeth Sherman and Paul Bergquist Jr.; and 17 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, May 17 at 1 p.m. at Nativity Lutheran Church, 179 Old County Road in Rockport. The Rev. Jerry Liabraaten will officiate.
