John H. Kennedy, 87, of Cumberland Center left us peacefully at Maine Medical Center on May 13, 2011.

John was born Nov. 27, 1923, in Waldoboro, the son of William Kennedy and Grace Calderwood Kennedy.

He enjoyed doing many activities and being with his family. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Virginia, for 65 years. He was a giving and caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was a graduate of Waldoboro High School. After which he served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 in the European and Pacific theaters, where he earned the rank of petty officer. Kennedy had been chairman of the Waldoboro Planning Board, chairman of the Downeast Council, Boy Scouts of America, past director of the Waldoboro Chamber of Commerce, and past president of the Lions Club of Waldoboro. He served in the Businessman’s Association in Farmington, was a director of the Farmington Lions Club; and was a corporator of the Franklin County Savings Bank. In Portland he was director of Junior Achievement; a director of Community Counseling; president and director of the area Development Council of the Chamber of Commerce; the United Way Campaign; a director and life member of the Cumberland Lions Club and a corporator of the former Maine Savings Bank.

For 40 years he was employed by Central Maine Power Company. He worked in Rockland, Waldoboro, Farmington and Portland, retiring as manager of the Southern Division.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Pinkham Kennedy; his daughter, Pam and her husband, Eugene Richardson; his daughter-in-law, Robin Kennedy Kiel; five grandchildren, Michelle Dennison, Julie Schmidt, and Bo, Ty and Max Kennedy; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Arlene Baum of St. George.

He was predeceased by his mother and father and three brothers, Harold, Arthur and Ronald Kennedy; his son, William Kennedy; and his granddaughter, Claire.

A graveside service will be held for the family at a later date.
