The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of a fatal car crash reported May 14 on Route 17 in Washington near Route 206.

The name of the victim has not yet been released due to notification of family members, a press release from Chief Deputy Tim Carroll stated.

At about 9 a.m., deputies from the Sheriff’s Office and a trooper from the Maine State Police responded to a head-on vehicle crash where the single occupant of one vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other single occupant of a truck was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck also asked to not have his or her name released at this time, the sheriff’s office reported.

Witnesses at the scene stated that the driver of one vehicle heading east on Route 17 attempted to pass another and pulled in front of an oncoming truck headed west on Route 17. Cause and other factors of the accident remain under investigation.

The crash is being reconstructed by the Maine State Police with assistance from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
