Cemetery open

The Hope cemetery located on Hatchet Mountain Road (Route 235) is open and people may drive down to your lots. Be sure and look around and see what has been cut or trimmed.

Garden news

The new greenhouse at Hope School is completed and has been delivered. Students from Midcoast School of Technology have been working for the last several weeks on the project in collaboration with Erik  Wade. It is a beautiful structure and will truly be an extension of the classroom.

What’s next?

Spring into the garden. Join the Hope Elementary students on Saturday, May 14 at 9 a.m. when local gardener Jane Mitchell will offer an informal presentation on integration of vegetables in the flower garden. Get your hands dirty if you want as they renovate the circle bed and do a little spring cleanup in the garden.

This summer there will be three fun and productive sessions in the garden. The first one will be Wednesday, June 22 at 9 a.m. They will be planting fruit trees with the help from UMaine Master Gardener Liz Stanley. The school still has seeds to sell so give them a call or go over and purchase some seeds to help the school.

Cemetery meeting

Please note the time change; the cemetery committee will be meeting Tuesday, May 17 at the Hope Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. If you have questions give me a call at 763-3751.

Funding and volunteers

The school will be applying for another grant from Maine Agriculture in the Classroom to support garden upgrades and classroom education. They need volunteers to keep it growing – parents, grandparents, teachers, community members and students are all welcome. Contact Dawn Smith-Cote at smithco@tidewater.net.

New firemen

The membership is growing in the Hope Volunteer Fire Department. New members are Dan Ford, Brandon Melanson and Jake Underhill. In case you missed last weeks column the public supper and food auction that was held April 30 was a huge success. A lot of people put a lot of time into this.

2011-2012 budget

The Hope School Committee has reduced the budget for the 2011-2012 school years to an increase of $29,173.65 over this current year’s amount. This is the first increase they have requested in three years. So with the increase that they had in enrollment, this is an incredibly minimal request. They have posted the budget on the school website and paper copies are also available in the front office at the school if you would like to review this before the May 23 public meeting. This meeting which is scheduled for 7 p.m. will require a vote on each article of the budget. Everyone should attend this meeting. The final figure at the end of the evening will be the amount that will be voted on June 14.
