George B. “Bert” Dyer, 88, died May 8, 2011, at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead, after an extended illness.

Born on Vinalhaven on July 25, 1922, he was the son of Leslie B. Sr. and Hazel Rogers Dyer. He was a graduate of Vinalhaven High School.

A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, it is reported that Bert, due to his seaman experience achieved since being on the waters as young fisherman since early boyhood, avoided basic training and immediately began service as Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class, aboard the U.S.S. Merrick.

From an early age, he lobstered off Vinalhaven and for many years was a fixture on Vinalhaven waters aboard his boat, the F/V Georgie & Vicki. He was always proud that local artists Gertrude Paddock and Robert Indiana both contributed their creativity to the signage on his boat’s stern. He continued fishing until his health forced him ashore.

Even after retiring, he was a familiar face on the waterfront, visiting, giving advice and swapping stories with the other fishermen, which proudly for Bert included some of his grandchildren. In more recent years he was often seen riding his motorized scooter throughout town. He had a designated seat on the sidewalk, outside Carver’s Harbor Market, where he often “held court.”

More than anything, Bert enjoyed visiting with his many friends. Even in recent years of declining health, he maintained a kind, loving and caring spirit, and love to have people stop by.

He was a charter member of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, which was founded by his father, Les Dyer Sr., in 1950, and for many years was active in the advancement of that organization. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Woodcock-Cassie-Coombs American Legion Post No. 18 in Vinalhaven.

Besides his second wife, Carrie Dyer, Bert was predeceased by one son, George “Boo” Dyer, and one brother, Les Dyer Jr.

He is survived by one daughter, Victoria Dyer (Vicki Lou- (Putz) of Columbia Falls; four brothers, Philip “Philo” Dyer and his wife, Sadie, of Vinalhaven, Joseph Dyer of Connecticut, Richard Dyer of Warren and Edward Dyer and his wife, Eileen, of Ohio; two sisters, Carolyn Dyer Bullerwell of Montana and Ada Dyer Williams of Rockland; his grandchildren, Sam Bickford, Justin Dyer, Joe Bickford and his wife, Elizabeth, all of Vinalhaven, and Natalie Dyer and her husband, Peter, of Maryland; his step-grandchilden, Erik Putz and his wife, Bonnie, of New York and Jessica Putz Farrelly and her husband, Peter; his great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Paige Bickford and Tyler Ward; his step-great-grandchildren, Trevor and Timothy Farrelly, all of Vinalhaven, John David and Auburn of New York; many nieces and nephews; and a special dedicated friend, Susan Holt.

Bert’s wish to all is to remember…Every day is a bonus!
