Softball field

Last week I talked about how great the Little League field looked – now it is time to rave about the softball field at the school. According to our principal, Gary Bosk, Larry Maddocks came in and asked if they could do a little work on the softball field. I think that traditionally the field hasn’t gotten much attention. Boy, that has changed! Larry, with the help of some of his friends and neighbors spent a weekend working on the field and it is fantastic! Special thanks go to Ken Keiran and Union Farm Equipment for donating the equipment. Ron Gibson for driving the tractor and Jason Young for hauling material. Thanks to Tucker Patten, Clay Mitchell, Logan Maddocks and Ben Smith for raking, shoveling and doing a lot of the handiwork. And a big special thanks to Larry for making this happen. Thank you! If you would like to see the new field and support the team- here is the Hope-Appleton Softball schedule:

Tuesday, May 3- Lincolnville @ H/A

Appleton Roots Garden seed sale update

Thanks to all our many supporters for another successful seed sale. Once again we have netted a little more than $200 to go towards our own garden programs here at school. We could not have done so without all the hands on deck…from colorers, label pasters, seed counters and weighers, poster makers, salespeople and supportive clientele. What a tremendous and fruitful community effort! Some varieties quickly sold out – carrots, spinach, snap peas and flowers – others lagged a bit – like zucchini. (I guess there has to be a few people willing to find them in their mailboxes at harvest time!) We also appreciated suggestions and requests for future sales. In fact, we still have a few packets left for anyone who wasn’t quite in the gardening spirit yet. If you missed out, please inquire in the office. We’ll try to make them available on a self-serve basis. Thanks again one and all! Now for some warm sunny days to get out and plant!

Battle of the Books

America’s Battle of the Books is upon us! The A.V.S. battles will take place on Friday, May 6. Our schedule/locations are as follows: Grade 3 at 10:45 a.m. in the library, grades 4-6 at 1 p.m. in the gym, and grades 6-8 at 1:45ish in the gym. (Remember, grade 6 teams have a choice of either the 4-6 list or the 6-8 list). I am hearing rumblings of excitement and a potential upset. Please feel free to join us for this academic team competition. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the school. Furthermore, if anyone would like to help or donate toward prizes, please contact the school. Winners of the AVS battles will travel to Lincolnville Central School on the morning of May 18, leaving AVS at 8:30 a.m. and arriving back here by noon. More details to follow!

Town meeting/school budget

I am biased on this topic, there is no way to pretend that I am not. I’m the chair of the school board (for a little while longer) and I think what we do is really important. A few years ago there were some changes to how school budgets were passed throughout the state. Here is a lay-persons explanation: Several years ago, embedded in the school consolidation law was a “budget validation process”. So, in order for our school budget to approved by voters, voters first have to attend town meeting for the school budget (set for Thursday, May 26, 7 p.m. at Appleton Village) and then vote on the budget approved during the school budget town meeting on Election Day (set for June 14.)

The CSD Budget also follows these requirements. The public meeting for the CSD Budget is Tuesday, May 31 at around 8 p.m. And again, you then vote on June 14 for the numbers set at the May 31 meeting.

Though this process may seem cumbersome and maybe even intimidating, participation is vital. If you have any questions about any of this, please feel free to give me a call at 342-2329.
