The Vinalhaven baseball and softball squads hosted their respective home openers on the island Saturday and the day featured two very different games that, unfortunately for the Vikings, had the same result.

The Viking baseball team dugĀ  into a deep hole and nearly recovered in the seventh inning, but could not overtake the Bucks and dropped an 11-10 decision. In the softball game, Vinalhaven could not contain Buckfield as the visitors collected 15 hits and went on a tear on the base paths to pull out a 17-4 victory over the islanders.

Vinalhaven was scheduled to play at Forest Hills of Jackman in a doubleheader Tuesday, May 3, but those games have been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 25. The Vikings’ next contests will be Friday, May 6 in a doubleheader at Greenville.

The Vikings trailed 11-2 in the seventh inning and battled back, down just one run with the bases loaded and two outs on the board. However, the hosts could not push across another run and suffered a tough defeat to the Bucks.

Top hitters for the islanders were Brian Stanley (2 doubles, single), Steven Osgood (double), Zeb Campbell (single), Trey Warren (2 singles) and Ben Beckman (single). For Buckfield, Williams belted two home runs, while Averill added two singles and Hedrick, Hart, Casey Robertson and Pepin, each one single.
