A driver fled his Volkswagen on the Barnestown Road in Hope as smoke filled the vehicle and flames quickly consumed it.

The fire broke out as George Ostensen of Hope was heading southwest toward Camden at approximately 3:15 p.m. on May 2.

“The car stalled and the next thing he knew it was on fire,” said Hope Fire Chief Clarence Keller. “He tried to put it out with an extinguisher that was in the vehicle but was unsuccessful.”

Ostensen said he had just completed work on the 1982 Volkswagen Vango, and was unsure where the fire originated.

Keller said it started in the engine compartment. The engine sits in the rear of that vehicle.

When Assistant Chief Alex Ludwig arrived at the scene near the Pearse farm, the vehicle was fully engulfed by flames. Keller and other Hope firefighters arrived with two pumpers, a utility truck and a tanker. Keller estimated using 500 gallons to extinguish the fire.

The Barnestown Road was closed for approximately one hour and traffic was rerouted. The car was eventually loaded on the back of All Directions and hauled away.
