Margaret “Rita” Backman, 89, formerly of West Haven, Conn., died April 27, 2011, at Anderson Inn in Camden.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., on Sept. 4, 1921, she was the daughter of William J. and Catherine (Carroll) Duggan. She was a graduate of the Waterbury Catholic High School and was salutatorian of her graduating class. During World War II, Rita worked at the Scoville Brass Works in Waterbury. On Oct. 5, 1946, she married Kenneth H. Backman after he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army having served in the European Theater. For over 50 years, they lived in West Haven where they raised their five children. She was an active communicant at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church and was a member of the altar guild.

Mrs. Backman moved to Camden to be near her daughter. In Camden she attended Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and was very devoted to her family.

The Backman family would like to acknowledge their deep appreciation to the nurses and aides at Quarry Hill for their exceptional care.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth H. Backman, who died in 1999.

She is survived by her five children, Dr. Karen A. Backman of Camden, Kenneth D. Backman and his wife, Lauren, of Cheshire, Conn., Kevin W. Backman and his wife, Janet, of West Haven, Keith J. Backman and his wife, Shaileen, of Purcellville, Va., and Kristopher D. Backman and his wife, Sherilee, of Brattleboro, Vt.; nine grandchildren; one sister, Ann Marie Giordano of Middletown, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Sunday, May 1 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the West Haven Funeral Home, 662 Savin Ave. in West Haven. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, May 2 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 600 Jones Hill Road in West Haven. Burial will follow in the Old Saint Joseph’s Cemetery on Hamilton Avenue in Waterbury.
