Frederick S. Davis Jr., 87, husband of Dorothy A. Davis, died April 21, 2011, at Winship Green Healthcare Center in Bath, after an extended period of declining health.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Aug. 4, 1923, he was the son of Frederick Snow Davis Sr. and Alice Lipp Davis. Educated in local schools, he graduated from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa., and began engineering studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His education was interrupted when he entered the service of his country during World War II, serving in Europe with the 590th Field Artillery Battalion of the 106th Infantry Division. Participating in the Battle of the Bulge, he was taken as a prisoner of war in December 1944. After five months as a POW, and having been moved constantly throughout Germany by his captors, Mr. Davis was liberated. After discharge from the VA Hospital back in the States, he returned to the university, but the trauma he endured made it impossible to complete his formal education. Always passionate about learning throughout his life, Mr. Davis continued a path of self-education. For two years he worked alongside a blind astronomer, becoming his traveling companion and completing the connection of the astronomer’s mind’s eye and the reality of the stars in the heavens. Fred continued his engineering interests working at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee on the AEC’s “atomic airplane” project among others. Although without a formal degree, at Grumman Aviation on Long Island, he became one of the “go-to” people for engineering solutions. He was a member of Mensa. He also worked many years as a licensed realtor.

On Oct. 8, 1955, he married Dorothy Ann Kuck in Cincinnati, Ohio. The couple eventually settled in Northport, Long Island, N.Y. In 1990, they moved to Union. Fred loved Maine, his new community and its people, volunteering with the Union Historical Society and becoming a member of the Peoples United Methodist Church. He was always a friendly face around the Common.

Mr. Davis was predeceased by his son, Frederick S. Davis III, in 2010.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Union; one daughter, Jennifer A. Davis and her husband, Terrance Martin, of Bayport, N.Y.; one brother, Robert Davis Sr. and his wife, Charlotte, of Ferrisburgh, Vt.; three grandchildren, Julia Martin, Harrison Martin and Annalise Martin; and one nephew, Robert Davis Jr. of Burlington, Vt.

A celebration of Mr. Davis’ life will be held Monday, May 2 at 11 a.m. at the Peoples United Methodist Church, Depot Street in Union. The Rev. George Hodgkins will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Peoples United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 105, Union, ME 04862.
