The second annual January Dam Blues Jam and barbecue Saturday, Jan. 8 from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Wells Hussey American Legion Post 42, Business Route 1.

Most of the bands that played the  Damariscotta area in 2010 will be performing, each doing a short 25-minute set. An all-star pro jam will follow, leading up to featured headline act Racky Thomas, a former Boston Blues Society winner who promises to rock the winter weekend with his Chicago/swing jump style of blues.

The Racky Thomas Band hails from Boston but plays the blues as though it came right out of post-war Chicago or the Mississippi delta. The band has received widespread critical praise in local, national and international blues publications, as well as worldwide radio airplay of their self-produced CDs.

The band formed in 1995 and has been performing ever since throughout the Northeast to enthusiastic audiences, steadily gaining a devoted following. The band got a great boost in 1997 by winning Boston’s prestigious Battle of the Blues Bands. That earned them a trip to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Competition, where they made a strong showing and gained broader exposure.

The Racky Thomas Band maintains a steady performance schedule of more than 150 dates a year and continues to earn rave reviews from critics and music enthusiasts alike. The band also has a number of festival performances to their credit and has opened for Luther ‘Guitar’ Jr. Johnson, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines and Susan Tedeschi.

There will be a $7 cover charge at the door; tickets are available in advance at dambluesfest.com. A portion of proceeds will benefit music lessons to an aspiring young student of the blues in the community.
