At high noon on the first day of 2011, brave souls will be jumping into Penobscot Bay to raise money for the Derek O’Brien Trust.

The event, in its sixth year, will take place at Lincolnville Beach. The trust is named for Derek O’Brien, who suffered a broken spine in a 2005 swimming accident.

The rules are simple: Meet at the beach in advance of the noon start time, take a quick dip in the ocean, and donate the money collected from family and friends to the Polar Challenge cause.

The water temperature at the 2010 dip hovered around 41 degrees Fahrenheit, with the air temperature approximately 13 degrees cooler. Snow was falling and there was a breeze off the water.

To participate in the 2011 Dip 4 Derek Polar Challenge, show up at Lincolnville Beach before noon on Jan. 1. Donations may be made to the Derek O’Brien Trust, c/o Peter Roper, 10 Spring St., Camden, ME 04843 or can be handed to Roper as he runs out of the chilly Atlantic.
