We’ve got good news to share. Our 12 Strays of Christmas promotion is off to a good start. We’ve picked 12 special strays to highlight during the holiday season with the hopes of helping them find homes by year’s end. Sweet Satin got his Christmas gift early and is now enjoying his new family. Brianna, our stray beagle is on a slumber party and our fingers are crossed that it’s a match. To help the remaining 10 have a home for the holidays, we’ve waived the adoption fee for these special cats and have reduced the adoption fee for these dogs by $25. The best gift these animals can receive is the gift of a loving home. Give the gift of love to Fallwind, Arabesque, Barrelstove, Skid, Kitty, Baby, Devon, Abbie, Nanook, and Sprite.

Our pet pick of the week is Sprite, a handsome, long haired neutered male cat. Sprite spent last Christmas at the shelter and it is about time that he had a real Christmas in his own home. Sprite is a very affectionate boy. He gets a bit over stimulated in the shelter environment with so many fellow felines around but when he has you all to himself he’s a real love bug. When you come to the shelter, Sprite will be the black, cross-eyed cat on the counter who greets each visitor. Sprite is one of our 12 Strays of Christmas.

Wow! What a fantastic turnout we had at our 3 Dog Night event at the 3 Dogs Café. Steve Watts really outdid himself. The food was amazing! Thank you to Steve and Keith and the wonderful staff at 3 Dogs Café. Thank you also to event sponsor Machias Savings Bank and the Rusty Hinges for their music. We’re grateful to all who came out to eat, drink and be merry to help the shelter animals. All of the proceeds, over $3,000 will go to help the animals. Thank You. We hope to do it again next year.

Don’t forget every Tuesday is Atti-Tuesday in December. On Atti-Tuesdays the adoption fee will be waived for all adult tortoiseshell and calico cats. Put a little catitude in your life. Adopt a tortie or calico during Atti-Tuesdays.

The Home Kitchen Café’s raffle in support of the shelter is going like gang busters. So far they’ve raised over $1,000 for the shelter. It’s not too late to enter to win a $50 gift certificate to the shelter, the drawing is Dec. 23. Stop by the restaurant, check out their great food, enter to win the raffle (the staff will ring a bell when you do) and help the homeless animals who count on the community for their care.

We are grateful to our friends at Hannaford Grocery in Rockland for helping the shelter animals out with their Holiday Pet Packages. Hundreds of people have purchased these pre-packaged bags that include much needed canned food for our dogs and cats as well as other necessary items from our wish list. Thank you to all the Hannaford customers who have supported the shelter through this program. If you’d like to help, they are still available for just under $10.

Although we don’t encourage giving pets as gifts, as choosing a lifelong companion is a very personal thing and the holidays can be a stressful time to introduce a new family member, we do have gift certificates available if your holiday gift list includes someone who is interested in adding a four-legged friend to their family. Need a last minute gift? How about an HSKC logo sweatshirt? Or give a gift of peace of mind with a personalized, engraved I.D. tag for that special feline or canine companion.

Wish list: 6-inch paper plates, rabbit food, sunflower seeds, latex gloves, 33 gallon trash bags, Scotch tape, laundry detergent, stamps, gift certificates to Wal-Mart & Staples, Hp 92 Ink, clay cat litter (non-clumping). We are located at 17 Buttermilk Lane off Route 1 in Thomaston. Contact us at 594-2200. P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841. We’re open every day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m, closed Sundays.
