We’re celebrating the 12 Strays of Christmas. Now through the end of December 12 special strays, eight cats and four dogs, who have been at the shelter for far too long, will be promoted to help them get the best possible gift for Christmas, a home. We’re hoping that these 12 strays will find their new families by year’s end. To help them, the adoption fee for these dogs is reduced by $25 and for these cats the adoption fee is waived. Give the gift of love to Fallwind, Arabesque, Barrelstove, Skid, Kitty, Baby, Brianna, Devon, Abbie, Nanook, Satin and Sprite.

We hope you will join us for a 3 Dog Night benefit at the 3 Dogs Café in Rockport on Friday, Dec. 10 from 5 to 9 p.m. It’s sure to be a fabulous evening with great food, cocktails and music from The Rusty Hinges at the beautifully decorated 3 Dogs Café thanks to the generosity of café owners Steve Watts and Keith Stone, along with Machias Savings Bank. Tickets are just $20 per person and can be pre-purchased at the shelter facility, 3 Dogs Café, Pet Quarters, Loyal Biscuit, Hollydachs and Machias Savings Bank or at the door on Friday night. All of the proceeds of the ticket sales will go directly to help the animals.

Our pet pick of the week is Annie a beautiful 3-year-old standard poodle. Annie is great with people, especially kids. She gets a long with most dogs but is decidedly anti-cat. Poor Annie was attacked by a cat and now holds a grudge against all cats. If you’ve got a cat free home, Annie will do just fine. Annie likes to play, take walks and go on car rides. She will make a wonderful companion.

Don’t forget every Tuesday is Atti-Tuesday in December. On Atti-Tuesdays the adoption fee will be waived for all adult tortoiseshell and calico cats. These tri-colored beauties are known for their unique personalities affectionately referred to as catitude and tortitude. They have been described as diva-like, independent, feisty, loving, playful and never boring. If you’re chosen by a tortie/calico, count yourself lucky. They will be a loving and entertaining companion. This is a limited time offer.

Thank you to the students at Georges Valley High School for rallying behind the animals to collect an impressive amount of food and supplies for the shelter this fall. It takes a lot of food to feed nearly 1,200 animals a year. We couldn’t do it without the help and support of the community – young and old. A community shelter is only as strong as its community. Our younger volunteers and donors bring their passion and enthusiasm and a renewed spirit of giving and caring to the animals and to the shelter, making our future look all the more brighter.
