For the first time ever, an active Penobcot Bay Medical Center physician is serving as chairman of the organization’s governing body. At its meeting on Nov. 22, Pen Bay Healthcare Trustees elected Dr. Joel Lafleur as their chairman.

Lafleur is a general surgeon who has been with PBMC since 2001. He lives in Camden with his wife Jane. They have two adult children.

He has served as both chief medical information officer and medical staff president.

An Auburn native, Lafleur is a magna cum laude graduate of Bowdoin College and the University of Vermont College of Medicine, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and serves on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and specializes in general surgery with a special interest in advanced laporascopic surgery and anti-reflux surgery.

“I believe Pen Bay’s membership in MaineHealth will offer the community significant advantages in terms of healthcare quality and value. I look forward to working with the medical staff, board and administration as we deal with this transition and health care reform, ” Lafleur said in a press release.

“The timing could not be better. With Joel’s leadership, Pen Bay will be in a strong position to deal with both the positive change as we transition to full MaineHealth membership and the continuing economic challenges we are sure to face in 2011,” said Roy Hitchings, president and CEO of Pen Bay Healthcare.
