Shlomit Auciello of Rockland is among the approximately 100 photographers whose work has been chosen by Cornell Lab of Ornithology for its inaugural Celebrate Urban Birds 2011 calendar.

Auciello’s photograph of a nest of goose eggs on a railroad bridge abutment was submitted in response to a call for funky nests in funky places. In her submission, Auciello explained that the nest is part of a sort of “tent city” of birds, a nesting area in the Cambridgeport section of Cambridge, Mass. where geese and ducks congregate. The nest is on a railroad bridge next to the Charles River, which is usually considered a lovely spot.

Auciello is a reporter for The Herald Gazette and VillageSoup.com. For more information  about the calendar, visit birds.cornell.edu/celebration.
