On Nov. 7, 20 intrepid sailors met in Thomaston to race Lasers for the benefit of Coastal Family Hospice Volunteers. The event drew 18 men and two women from as far away as Cape Elizabeth, Harpswell, South Bristol and Belfast, as well as sailors from the Midcoast.

Racers ranged in age from 15 to 70. Jeff Dinse set the course. Martha Page timed the finishes. Drew Lyman and Peter Clapp offered spectators a chance to watch the races aboard their boats and several chase boats kept an eye on the racers who capsized regularly in the chilly waters, prompting some participants to label it a swimming, not a sailing, regatta.

George Haselton of Rockport earned first place. Hank Thorburn of Harpswell took second. Fred Boursier of Warren came in third.

Following the bracing event, sailors and their supporters enjoyed chowder at Chris Biggart’s sail loft, with Atlantic Baking Company donating bread. Hospice volunteers and friends made a variety of chowders, and friends of hospice baked sweet goods. Warm cider was supplied by Sewall’s Orchard. A silent auction followed and a raffle for a week’s vacation in Prince Edward Island was won by Lucy Bauer.

The cold, blustery afternoon was warmed by the enthusiasm of the racers and by the generous donations of local artists and vendors, said race organizers in a news release. Rockport Marine, Hamilton Marine, Primo, Francine Bistro, Café Miranda, Linda Shepard, Mary Jean Clifford, Ewe to You knitters, Douglas Smith, Eastern Tire, Blue Harbor House B&B, The County Inn, Trade Winds Health Club, Rockport Lobster, Gerda Bonde, The Reading Corner, The Thomaston Café and the Camden Snow Bowl all offered gifts and certificates. Party Fundamentals, Trillium Caterers and Elm St. Printing added their support along with the hard work of volunteers and friends of Coastal Family Hospice.
