Everyman Repertory Theatre’s opening production for its 2010-2011 season will be the smash Broadway/West End/worldwide hit “The 39 Steps.” The show will open Friday, Nov. 19 for a two-weekend run at the Camden Opera House, Elm Street/Route 1.

Described as where Hitchcock meets hilarious, the show is an adaptation of the Alfred Hitchcock movie version of John Buchan’s novel. In transferring it from the screen to the stage, the play’s author Patrick Barlow has turned a romantic spy story into a Monty Pythonesque farce/romance/spy story.

“Just try to imagine John Cleese playing the Robert Donat role from the original film, and it’ll give you some idea of what we’re talking about here,” said Everyman’s artistic director, Paul Hodgson. “It’s not just a funny family show, it’s a side-splitting, weeping-with-laughter family show.”

The cast of the Everyman show features John Burstein, David Troup, Jennifer Hodgson and Paul Hodgson. The production was designed by Ken Barnes. The hero, Richard Hannay, is played by one man throughout. The heroines, Annabella, Margaret and Pamela, are played by one actress. All the other parts, around 150 of them, are played by two actors called Clown 1 and Clown 2.

Tickets are now on sale. “The 39 Steps” will be presented Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m.; and Sundays at 3 p.m. Nov. 19 through 21. Tickets are $18, $10 for students, and can be purchased by contacting Everyman Rep’s box office at 236-0173 or online at everymanrep.org. Tickets also are available at HAV II and The Owl and Turtle, both in Camden.
