The Humane Society of Knox County is happy to report that we had a very busy October – adopting out 48 cats, 12 dogs, 23 parakeets, two rabbits and one pot bellied pig named Polly. And while we are thrilled that we helped so many animals find wonderful homes last month, this only scratches the surface of those still awaiting homes at the shelter, the majority of which being adult cats. Therefore, during the month of November the adoption fee for adult cats will be reduced by 50 percent to just $25.

Sadly, black cats are the most likely to be overlooked by potential adopters. We know that they are special and each have their own endearing qualities and distinct personalities but because there are so many up for adoption they often get overlooked for their more colorful counterparts. They’ve been waiting long enough to go home. So, to help them out and in keeping with a holiday tradition of sorts, we will be offering our own Black Friday Special. Every Friday in November, the adoption fee for any black or black and white cat will be waived. As always, potential adopters will be screened to make sure they will provide a good home and every cat will be spayed/neutered, given age appropriate shots, tested, de-wormed, flea treated and receive a free first vet exam.

Our pet pick of the week is J.D. an adult neutered male, black cat and a shelter favorite. Shelter manager, Theresa Gargan, says he is “One awesome cat!” A stray from Warren, the poor thing was so riddled with ear mites that he had scratched deep wounds into the back of his head. J.D. received proper medical care and some good ole’ TLC, and now he is completely healed and is ready to go home. This big boy is a gentle giant. If you are looking for an easy going love bug, J.D. may be the cat for you.

It’s costly to feed the multitudes so we are very pleased to announce that our friends at Rockland Hannaford are offering, for the third year in a row, a Holiday Pet Package full of items from our wish list. For under $10 you can put food in the bowls of our animals and other necessities to help us help the animals. You can purchase a pet package at the display near the cash registers. We appreciate your support.
