In celebration of its 41st year of publication, Words and Images, the annual journal of arts and literature published from the University of Southern Maine, has announced its open call for submissions for the 2011 issue.

Words and Images is accepting works of all printable varieties of prose, poetry and artwork through Dec. 31. Submissions are open to students and non-students. Authors of stories, memoirs, essays, plays and poetry are encouraged to submit their writing. Likewise, visual artists from all media are encouraged to submit two-dimensional images of their work.

Words and Images is the current incarnation of USM’s annual literary journal, which has existed since the first printing of Mom’s Apple journal in 1969 when the school was still called University of Maine in Portland. Words and Images maintains a tradition of publishing the finest in literary artists from within the USM population that has extended to the Southern Maine community and beyond. Past contributors include Dennis Lehane, Richard Russo, Carolyn Chute, Sharon Olds, Adrienne Rich and the artist William Pope L, to name just a few.
