Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine is encouraging local businesses and organizations in Knox, Lincoln and Waldo Counties to participate in their “Bids for Kids” Wreath Auction which will take place from Nov. 24 through Dec. 8. The fundraising auction supports the non-profit organization’s youth mentoring programs throughout the three-county area.

“This is a great way for businesses to promote their products and services available here in the Midcoast, while supporting a great cause,” says event coordinator Cathy Hardy. “Each wreath is unique and the items and gift certificates featured on the wreaths make wonderful holiday gifts for family and friends. We’re expecting more than 300 wreaths this year, and all proceeds from this event are used to support the important one-to-one mentoring programs Big Brothers Big Sisters makes possible. Shoppers who purchase one of these wreaths, are not only adding holiday cheer to their home, but their also helping more than 300 local youth as well.”

Businesses and organizations that would like to participate in the event should call Big Brothers Big Sisters at 593-0380 now to get on the wreath delivery list. Then, on Nov. 18 and 19, BBBS volunteers will deliver live, 12-inch evergreen wreaths to all participants, who will then have several days to decorate the wreath with holiday decorations, items from their store, gift certificates and other treats. Volunteers will return on Nov. 23 to pick up the decorated wreaths and deliver them to eight different sites where they will be displayed for public viewing and open for silent auction bids.

Bidding on the wreaths will start on Wednesday, Nov. 24 (the day before Thanksgiving) and continue through the first week of December. The display sites are: Camden National Bank branches in Camden, downtown Rockland, Waldoboro and downtown Belfast; Key Bank at the Camden Square Plaza; Bangor Savings Bank in Unity; and Bath Savings Institution in Damariscotta.

Wreaths valued at more than $100 will be featured at several Live Auctions to be held in Camden, Owls Head, Damariscotta and Belfast. The live auctions will take place at Camden National Bank’s downtown office on Dec. 3 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. as part of the Christmas by the Sea festivities; at the Damariscotta River Grill on Dec. 4 from 4 to 5 p.m; at the Owls Head Transportation Museum on Dec. 5 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. during intermission of their free holiday concert; and at Camden National Bank’s Belfast branch office on Dec. 8 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. as part of the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event. Approximately 20 to 50 wreaths will be auctioned at each location. All live auction wreaths will also be shown online at www.bbbsmcm.org and absentee bids will be accepted up until one hour before each live auction for those unable to attend.
