Local children’s book author and illustrator Chris Van Dusen will introduce his latest Mr. Magee book Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Owl & Turtle Bookshop, 32 Washington St./Route 105 in the Knox Mill complex, from 10 a.m. to noon.

It has been seven years since Van Dusen took us on “A Camping Spree With Mr. Magee” and 11 since we went “Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee.” The wait is over, thanks to “Learning to Ski with Mr. Magee.” As in the other stories, Mr. Magee and his little dog, Dee, start out on a simple adventure in the Maine outdoors and get into terrible trouble with a whale or a bear or a moose. But just in the nick of time, that whale or bear or moose saves the day. Life is fun and funny in a Van Dusen story.

Van Dusen also wrote and illustrated “If I Built a Car,” which won the E. B. White Read Aloud Award from the Association of Booksellers; and “The Circus Ship,” which has been chosen by the State of Maine to be given to all public school kindergartners this year. Several years ago, the State of Maine chose “Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee” to give to all kindergartners. Van Dusen and Robert McCloskey are the only authors who have had more than one title given out to inspire school children to love reading.

Van Dusen also illustrated the Mercy Watson series written by Kate DiCamillo, and he has two other books on the drawing board.
