Downeast School of Massage is seeking volunteer clients for the final massage therapy session of a training for professional massage therapists. The school will provide relaxation massage sessions to people from the community. People in treatment, diagnosis, and life beyond cancer have benefited from these sessions. Anyone with a cancer history, no matter how long ago, is welcome. Massage is adapted to effects of cancer or cancer treatment, when necessary. Sessions are closely supervised by the instructor.

The sessions will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2:30 p.m. by appointment.

Please note several important things about this clinic:

  • The clinic is offered free of charge.
  • Clinic sessions are by appointment only. Interested individuals need to sign-up for the clinic, and be confirmed, by calling 832-5531 and speaking with Emily Waltz.
  • During the practice clinic, the professional massage therapists and advanced students in the training are closely supervised by the instructor, Tracy Walton. Walton has taught this training to massage therapists nationally since 1998. She consults to hospitals, schools and therapists about massaging clients safely in various settings.
  • Once confirmed, each volunteer client completes the Client Health Form before the workshop.
  • A volunteer client who is currently in cancer treatment, between treatments, or whose last treatment session occurred after Oct. 23, 2009 must fill out a Physician Permission Form. Others can use the form to communicate with their physician, or otherwise check with their physician, but this is not required.
  • Once confirmed as a volunteer client in the clinic, individuals will receive directions to the Downeast School of Massage.

This training and clinic have been warmly received by clients and students, alike. The support of local advocates, support group facilitators, and health care providers have been invaluable to the success of the workshop.

Those interested in volunteering, call Emily Waltz, 832-5531 or e-mail her at
