Heartwood Regional Theater Company is busy this fall producing an original script and staging of “Beauty and the Beast.” The show will tour a variety of schools, including a number in Knox County and Lincolnville Central School, in the coming weeks.

The public will have a one-night-only opportunity to see the enchanting production before the Heartwood Goes to School program hits the road on a 21-school tour. “Beauty and the Beats” will be presented Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Parker B. Poe Theater on the Lincoln Academy campus, Academy Hill Road.

The production is led by actor-teachers Millie Santiago, Kevin Kiley, Elise Voigt and Steve Shema. Maddy Sherrill, a Lincoln Academy student, is participating as a fall trimester intern. The play is written and directed by Griff Braley, Heartwood’s artistic director. While it bears similarities to the well-known animated film and Broadway show, there may be surprises for the theater audience.

While more than 150 versions of the tale exist in the world, Heartwood’s production is based on early European versions first told in the French salons, where adults spent recreational time sharing art and discussion. With personified objects, music and theater magic, the show works as an homage to Jean Cocteau’s famous film version from the 1940s, said Braley. Working with technical director Tish Munson and costumer Sue Ghoreyeb, the four-member teaching team and intern have reworked Braley’s script into a 50-minute theater piece that delicately entreats the story to unfold with images depicted in dance, light, projection and physical improvisation.

After the fall tour, this dynamic outreach program will treat participating schools to a year-long schedule of visiting artist days, extended residencies and workshops in music, dance, movement, improvisation and acting.

Tickets for the public performance $9 for adult in advance, $12 at the door; and $5 for students through high school. Seating is general admission and limited; reservations are strongly suggested by calling 563-1373 or sending e-mail to info@heartwoodtheater.org.
