Appleton Historical Society meets Oct. 4

The October meeting of the Appleton Historical Society will be held Monday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., in the new Mildred Stevens Williams Memorial Library, in the conference room across the hall from the Sukeforth-Pease Room. Mary Kate Moody will speak on the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, in Appleton. The Appleton branch, or “Union” of the WCTU was founded on Nov. 14, 1899, and the last recorded meeting took place in 1966. The WCTU was an organization opposed to the consumption of alcohol and other “vices.” Moody has studied old records and documents found at the Whitney Farm, where Cecilia Whitney was an active member of the WCTU, continuing her involvement with the state organization until 1971. The business portion of the meeting will begin at 7 p.m., and the evening’s program by 7:30 p.m. Remind a friend, take a neighbor. Light refreshments will be served after the program.

Waldoboro Firefighter Auxiliary hosts supper

The Waldoboro Firefighter Auxiliary will be hosting a spaghetti supper to kick-off Fire Prevention Week. Supper will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Waldoboro Fire Station, 1600 Atlantic Highway (Route 1). The menu includes: spaghetti, meatballs, salad and bread. The auxiliary is requesting a donation of $7 for adults and $4 for children. The proceeds received support the work of the Waldoboro
Firefighter Auxiliary.

Woman Talk: The Best is Yet to Come

Carla Sanders, of Hope Peace Ceremonies, hosts the first in a series of conversations for women only on love and sex. The first topic is “The Best is Yet to Come: Intimacy after Menopause.” Join Sanders on Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for a bowl of soup, a mug of tea, and open conversation in her parlor at 379 Hatchet Mountain Rd., Hope. Sanders is a sexuality educator with long experience in women’s circles and spiritual healing. Suggested donation $20. Reservations are required. Public Dinner

Washington Fire Department, Old Union Road, is having a public supper on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Turkey, roast beef, baked beans, casseroles, pies and much more. Cost: Adults $7, children, $3. Sponsored by the Washington Fire Department Auxiliary.

Knox County Teachers Association convenes

The Knox County Teachers Association will meet Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Offshore Restaurant on Route 1 in Rockport at noon. The guest speaker will be Jean Lawrence, who will talk about good books to read.
