Owls Head Garden Club will host a program about edible and medicinal mushrooms on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 9:30 a.m. at The Owls Head Community Building on Ash Point Drive.

Presenter David Spahr is an author, naturalist, photographer and edible-forest farmer. His recent book “Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada” was released in July 2009.

The illustrated guidebook provides easy-to-understand information on finding, collecting, identifying and preparing the safer and more common edible and medicinal mushroom species of New England and Eastern Canada. Spahr, a commercial photographer living in Washington, has collected edible mushrooms for 37 years.

He is a member of the Maine Mycological Society and is on the Maine Mushroom Task Force developing rules for the foraging and sale of wild mushrooms.

This program is free and open to all. Garden Club members are to note that the time is different from their previous meetings at noon and are encouraged to bring their spouses or friends to the meeting.

Owls Head Garden Club is dedicated to encouraging and cultivating an interest in gardening and in promoting civic beauty. For more information call 596-6032
