A five-week Japanese calligraphy class for beginners and experienced students will begin Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 4:45 to 6 p.m. and continue to Oct. 27 at the Penobscot School, 28 Gay St.

Instructor Nobuko Kamecke was raised in Japan and studied there privately with a master calligrapher. Since the 1970s, and while still living south, Kamecke made annual month-long treks to Maine to work on Monhegan Island, finally resettling in Thomaston about 2002. She has lived and exhibited in California, New York and Maine.

All materials for the class are supplied. Children 12 years old and younger must be accompanied by a parent. The fee for the session is $75. To register, call 594-1084 or visitlanguagelearning.org.
