On Sept. 11, a group of mothers and wellness professionals known as the Hot Mammas for Fit Kids, set the Rockport Opera House hopping with a benefit dance for Zing!, Pen Bay Healthcare’s new program to get children energized and off the couch.

On stage providing the dance music was Stiff Whiskers, a band from Ellsworth.

Zing! is adopting practices tested in pilot projects across the country, and is designed to provide overweight children age six to 18 with a personalized high-intensity program, four months in duration, that includes exercise and nutrition.

The program also includes a customized care plan developed by a pediatrician, behavioral health specialist, dietitian, and exercise physiologist. The emphasis is on the program’s 5-2-1-0 plan: eat at least five fruits and vegetables on most days; cut recreational screen time to two hours a day or less; participate in one hour or more of physical activity every day; and drink water and low fat milk, instead of soda and sugar-sweetened drinks.
