The Damariscotta River Grill will host an artists’ reception to honor the two artists featured in the latest exhibit of the “Art at the Grill” series, owners Chef Rick Hirsch and General Manager Jean Kerrigan announced Sept. 14.

Scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 23, 4 to 6 p.m., the reception will give guests the opportunity to visit with the artists while enjoying appetizers and cocktails from the Midcoast Maine restaurant’s creative menu.

The show, which features the work of Caren-Marie Michel and Kathleen Daughan is titled “Painting Coastal Maine” and will be on display at the grill Sept. 20 to Nov. 1.

Avid plein air painters and board members of Pastel Painters of Maine, Michel and Daughan together founded the” Paint Out” group for Pastel Painters of Maine in 2006 and have been painting together since that time.

Caren-Marie Michel finds the subjects for her paintings from her frequent walks and travels, bringing her vision and experience of the place to the viewer. Passionate about plein air painting, Michel works directly with the experience of the color, values, color temperature, finding the changing light and conditions both exciting and challenging.

Michel’s work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows, including the 2009 Coasts and Edges, the 2007 Greater Portland Panorama, and the Invitational Salon Exhibition of Small Works. Her work also has been featured in a number of popular publications, including “Maine Boats Homes and Harbors” and “American Art Collector.” Her work can be viewed at the Carver Hill Gallery in Rockport and Rockland and the North Light Gallery in Millinocket.

Kathleen Daughan received her art education at the University of New Hampshire, where she studied with renowned Maine painter John Laurent. Today, she paints in oil and pastel and focuses her attention on landscapes and seascapes.

She paints New England, the Eastern Seaboard States and Northern California, and her work is included in private collections across the United States, in several European countries and Australia. Most recently, her work has been included in the Annual Open Juried Show at the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit and in The Maine Scene juried exhibition at River Tree Center for the Arts in Kennebunkport. She is represented by the Boothbay Region Art Gallery.

Now in its fifth year, the “Art at the Grill” series brings recognition to Maine artists and has become an integral part of the area’s social scene. Throughout 2010, the grill will host more than 15 artists, from painters to potters, photographers to fabric artists. For more information about Art at the Grill, visit or contact Kim Traina at
